Hobbie Family

Because my cousin Austin was in town with his wife and two kids,
the Hobbie family decided to have a potluck.
.
Haley, Aubrey & Anthony
.
Sophia, Coby, & Taylor
.
Heather, Sophia & Brittney
When I got ready to take the picture, Brittney held her finger up to tell me to wait just one minute. She put her finger down when she was ready but Sophia thought that she needed to copy Brittney. As you'll notice, she has her finger in the air :)
.
My aunt Judy found some big plastic ears in one of the drawers.
Either that or she's turned into an elf!
.
Amber & Heather
.
Nikki & Ava
.
Cousins on the playground
.
Anthony & Ava
.
Gary, Austin & Anthony
.
Ava & Taylor
.
And by soon, I probably mean
not until this weekend.
(See previous post)

Meanwhile,
here is a better picture of Brit's cheer team.
Brittney is on the top far left.

Brittney's Cheer Schedule

Here is Brittney's Competition Cheer Schedule that I've been promising:
I can't believe I have a kid who is a cheerleader. Brittney got me a shirt that says "Cheer Mom". I'm the least likely to be running around in a shirt like that! I felt a little lucky that it wasn't here in time for me to wear it to the last meet in Watertown!
I do have to admit that it's kind of fun to watch. Last year when Brittney started, I was expecting more of the old-school cheerleading. Like pompoms standing in a line trying to excite the crowd. But competition cheer isn't anything like that. They do a lot of stunting and tumbling (gymnastics). Brittney is what's known as a flier. That means that she's one of the girls that they throw up in the air. Makes a mom a little nervous, but I guess that's just part of being a mom. I know she'd love to have you come and watch but if not, I'll try to post a video at some point. If I can figure out how!

Saturday Sept 8th @ Yankton @ 12:30pm

The second day of school is going to be great!
The kids all had a good first day of school and today I get the day off! Well, unless I consider the ten million pounds of laundry and all the cleaning and kids paperwork for school that I need to complete. It does look like I'll get to have lunch with a friend today though! I think we could have lunch together everyday for a year and never run out of things to talk about. And someday I'll let her talk too! Just kidding........mostly :)
.
The saddest part of the morning:
Taylor walked with her friend, I dropped Anthony off at Medary, Brittney off at the High School, then headed to Camelot to drop off Riley & Zeke. As each kid left, Sophia happily told them "Bye!".....until we reached the final school and the last kids left the van. Then she started crying "I go too! I go too!" She cried all the way home. The downfall of being the youngest child.  :(
.
Accident
Yesterday on the way to school(s), we saw a bike/car accident and knew the boy on the bike who was hit. Fortunately, he seems to be ok and was able to go to school a bit later. It could have been so much worse than it was. His mom saw it happen and I think it shook her up more than the boy. A good reminder to my kids to be safe and always wear their helmets.
.
Party
Tonight we're having a potluck with some of our family on my dad's side. My cousin is in town from Houston with his family, including their little boy and their new baby.

Text

I have to share this text a friend just sent me:

Hello stay at home moms. How about we have a party at tricia wilkins house at 12:30 today....tell everyone you know...then at 12:45 we will all cry for 2 min then pick up our kids at 1pm.

Gave me a good laugh this morning! Thanks Joni!

1st Day of School

Never fear, I have plenty more vacation pictures and stories. But today is all about the first day of school.

Brittney - 9th Grade BHS
Brittney was not impressed that I wanted to take her picture on the first day of high school. This was the best I could get. I told her I was posting it anyway! She only has to be at school from 8:30am to 10:00am today but then she has cheer practice this afternoon.
.
Riley - 5th Grade Camelot
Riley wasn't impressed by my need to take a picture either. It didn't help that he left his school shoes at his friend's house so he didn't have them for the first day. To get a picture, I finally told him he couldn't go until I had a picture with at least a little smile. This was his best effort.
.
Taylor & Zeke - 4th Grade Camelot
They are both excited and didn't mind the picture.
They are on the same team but not in the same class.

.
Anthony - 2nd Grade Medary
He didn't mind the picture but didn't want to stand still.
He was anxious to find his friends on the playground.
.
Sophia is off to daycare.
I didn't get her picture because Steve took her before I could snap one.
.
Steve's at work at the bank and in a few minutes,
I'm heading to the farm to drive a van to the produce stand.
Steve will be going to Brittney's high school orientation tonight at 6pm and I'll be at the produce stand most of the day until about 6:30pm.
.
I'm not at Headstart until the 10th of Sept so I think next week will be my week of cleaning and organizing for the fall while the kids are in school. This week is already booked solid!

On the Way to Colorado

Sara and I left Brookings on Tuesday afternoon and drove to Rapid City. We arrived there in time for supper with my brother Jody, his girlfriend Brandi and my cousin's wife and kids. Jody made some spectacular steak burritos with all the extras. He even browned the tortillas the old fashioned way! It was my own personal Qdoba :) We spent the night there and then took off in the morning.

We drove through Needles Highway on our way out of South Dakota. The twisty, turny roads, beautiful views, tunnels through the road and looking out over the sheer drops on the edge were fun for a while but after the first half hour we were wishing we could just have a straight flat road again.

We finally got out of South Dakota and into Wyoming. In Wyoming, we didn't see a thing. Literally. We saw nothing. There were no towns, no people, no houses, no mountains, no animals. Not even any color.

That state was NOT our favorite, although it was much worse when we came home, for a very different reason, but I'll get to that later. Somewhere in the middle of that desolate state, my check engine light came on. I wasn't overly concerned right away because the car seemed to be driving fine but I didn't want to continue too far without checking it out.  Then the ABS light came on, which I knew had to do with the brakes. I definitely didn't want to drive up into the mountains if there were brake issues. Of course, there wasn't even anywhere to check on it for hundreds of miles. We continued on and called ahead to the closest VW dealership. Long story shorter, lots of internet searching and phone calls with techs later, we finallly just ended up continuing into Denver. We pulled into the service garage a half hour before they were closing. After discussion and a look at the car, the concensus there was also that none of the issues would be worsened by driving. They set us up with an appointment in the morning to work on the car.

One of the two things on my list for the area was to eat at Casa Bonita in Denver so that's where we went next. It's Mexican food with a lot of ambiance. This is the view from our table.

I didn't get a very good picture of the cliff divers with my phone so just imagine a diver climbing up the rocks and then diving from various spots into the water below. It really wasn't a great as I remembered, maybe because I was tired. The waterfall was noisy and the food wasn't as good as Guadalajara's at home, but it was fun to watch the cliff diving and the sopaipillas with honey were awesome!

Here are some interesting facts about the restaurant:
  • It took approximately one year to create Casa Bonita.
  • The fountain in front of the restaurant was shipped in pieces from Mexico.
  • The restaurant boasts over 52,000 square feet and seats over 1,000 guests.
  • The waterfall, designed to resemble the cliffs of Acapulco, is 30 feet high and the pool is 14 feet deep.
  • The restaurant has Black Bart's secret hideout, puppet shows, arcade games, El Mercado, and giftshop.
We left the restaurant and proceeded to find a hotel to spend the night. Which turned out to be more of a problem than I thought. Everything was booked! So Sara got a nice picture of downtown Denver while we tried to find a hotel.
I think everything was full because of the major bike race that was going on across Colorado. We were always just one day ahead of the racers. I should have just called my aunt that lives in Denver but I thought it would be easier just to grab a hotel. We ended up sitting in a parking garage and searching online to find somewhere to stay. We finally found a decent hotel on the outskirts of Denver that had one room left so we booked it and spent the night there.

I interrupt Colorado posts for this important announcement

I have some cool stories and pictures from Colorado but first I need to write about a little side visit.
FYI: I don't cry and this almost made me cry right in a restaurant. So fair warning. Although maybe it's not a big deal to anyone but me. But it's kind of long.
.
On our way back from Colorado, we stopped in Rapid City for a short visit. I wanted to make sure to say goodbye to my brother Jody and his girlfriend. We ran in to Great Clips to see Brandi for a minute and then I texted Jody to see if he could meet us for lunch. While we waited for him to respond, I decided to text one of my biological aunts, Billie, who lives in Rapid. I told her that if she was making something good for breakfast, we'd be right over.
She responded with, "Chicken. Get your @%!* over here!

I thought for a minute she was calling me a chicken and thought I was scared to come over but then I realized that she's the manager of the KFC and was inviting us for lunch.
When we got there, she gave Sara and I cups and trays so we could get whatever we wanted from the buffet. I chatted with some bio cousins who also work there and then we sat down to eat. My aunt Billie had texted another aunt, Pat, who was in town for the week to let her know that I was in town too. Pat's instructions were, "Make her keep eating until I get there!"

It's always a bit awkward for me to be around a lot of my bio family (who I didn't meet until I was 20+). When I think it through, I think it's because they're so different from the family where I was raised. It's really out of my comfort zone, although the more years I'm around them the easier it gets. But God always seems to know when I need a little extra something. As I was waiting for the rest of my bio family to show up for lunch at KFC, I looked over at the door and practically flew out of my chair. I rushed to the door, tapped Ingrid on the shoulder and when she turned around, I gave her a huge hug!

*Side note: If you know me very well at all, you know that I don't go for any kind of touching, hugging, or displays of affection. But there are a few people in life who I let bi-pass that rule. And even fewer people who I bi-pass that rule for myself. One of those people had walked through the door into KFC!

Ingrid was my mom's (Connie) roommate in college, and for most of my childhood, I actually thought that she was my aunt. I was pretty devastated when I found out that she wasn't really related at all. But as far as I'm concerned, she is just like an aunt. Not only do I love her and consider her family, but she has ended up being my rock (solid ground) a few times when I was with my bio family in Rapid City and emotionally needed some stability when I was feeling way too overwhelmed. She is part of the solid part of my past, and whether she knows it or not, I know I can lean on her and then life feels better again.

Ingrid lives in Rapid City but I wasn't going to call her when we were passing through because it was Sunday morning and I knew she'd be in church across town and we would be heading home fairly quickly. God knew I needed to see her. She and her friends decided to eat at KFC for lunch after church and there we all were!

After chatting and a few more hugs, I went back to our table. Eventually, we were eating lunch with my bio brother, two bio aunts, a couple bio cousins and one of my bio grandpa's sisters and her son. I knew we couldn't stay too long because we were really tired and I knew I didn't want to drive home in the dark. I think we ended up at KFC for a couple of hours. Right before we were going to leave, I leaned over to my aunt Pat and asked if she was there when I was born.

I didn't really expect that she had been because the story I had been told by my bio mom was that my brother Jody, who is two years older than me and has a different bio father, was supposed to be put up for adoption. But the nurse made a mistake and brought him into the hospital room and when her mom (my bio grandma) saw him, they couldn't put him up for adoption. So when I was born two years later, there were very strict instructions that I was NOT to be brought into the room at all. So as far as I knew, as a baby, I was never held or loved on by my bio mom, grandparents, aunts or any family. They never even saw me.

But when I asked Aunt Pat, she said that she WAS there when I was born. She told me how excited she was and how much she had always loved me and never stopped looking for me. I asked her if she knew my name before I was adopted and she did.

*Another side note: As an adopted child, I have a birth certificate that has my adopted name on it and my adoptive parents' names on it. I'm not allowed, by law, to have the origional birth certificate. When I was adopted, my parents wanted to know what my name had been for the first four months of my life. The social worker wouldn't/couldn't tell them. She did say that the foster parents called me Missy. My mom asked if that's because my name was Michelle or Melissa. The social worker said that she couldn't say. Which was unfortunate because they probably would have kept my given name. Unless it was something awful, like Barbie or something :)

So my aunt Pat told me my given birth name was Melissa Kay Torres. That's what I was called for four months. That's also how my birth family thought of me until they met me when I was 20 years old. Then Pat continued to tell me a story. She worked at a place like a Boys & Girls Club when she was a teenager. A boy came up to her and asked if she wanted to meet his new foster sister. She said yes and then took one look at me and knew exactly who I was. She said I looked exactly like my brother! She knew the foster family, the very foster family that I've been trying to get the state to help me find and have been plowing through tons of state paperwork and red tape to try to figure out.

With one little question, I had answers I'd been looking for for quite a while now. Aunt Pat also told me that she used to go over to the foster family's home and hold me and play with me. She did that until the state found out that she knew where I was and had me moved (which ended up being my adoptive home). I was 4 months old. She's been looking for me ever since. She cried on the day I turned 18 because there was still no word from the state that I was searching for them.

Yet another side note: In SD, an adoptee can't even begin to search or petition the court to open records until they turn 18. That's a whole post in itself. I won't go there now.

How cool is it that my aunt loved me enough to hold me and spend time with me after I was born.
I did have a bit of familiar in the unfamiliar.
I was able to hear a voice that I had known before.
I was loved and important to my birth family.

And when we left KFC yesterday, it was again with many hugs and reassurances that they loved me.
How cool is that?!

Sophia Says

Sophia was sitting on my lap and took the lid off a little box. She likes to pretend to make me "coffee" and "snacks" all the time so when she pretended to pull something out of the empty box, I said, "Yum!" and pretended to eat it.
She scowled at me and said, "STOP! DON'T EAT MY TREASURE!!!"
I'm so easily confused by invisible things.
Child #1 still in Sioux Falls
Child #2 just left for a sleepover after a football scrimmage
Child #3 showered, ready for bed and currently frosting the cake she baked
Child #4 bathed and in bed
Child #5 bathed and in bed
Child #6 pj's on and ready for bed
Husband #1 working at WingFest at the Swiftel Center
.
In case you're counting, that's all children/husband either gone, in bed or ready for bed.
Just a few more minutes and it should be all quiet at my house. I think my Nook and a good book is calling my name!

Busy day today.

Cheer practice this morning for Brittney, babysitting all day for a friend, early childhood visit for Sophia, 2nd grade registration for Anthony, High school registration for Brittney (along with school pictures & cheer team pictures), 5th grade registration for Riley, 4th grade registration for Taylor and Zeke, orthodontist appointment to install Tayor's expander and braces, and football equipment checkout for Riley. All this before 5:30pm. Good thing I had 2 cups of coffee this morning!!!
.
In the midst of a busy day, I'm constantly praying for some good friends that have court today. I'm praying that the truth will be made known and that others would see the love of Christ through them in the midst of a very difficult situation.

School Supplies

Three out of five kids now have their school supplies. I picked up Anthony's this evening and extra special thanks to Grandma Connie for taking Brittney and Joan for taking Taylor!
The kids have so much more fun when they get some one-on-one shopping time with someone special :)
So now just Zeke and Riley left! And only 18 more days until school starts!
.

Taylor Says

Taylor called me from Steve's cell phone to let me know, "Mom, we need therapy!"
I didn't disagree.............but it turns out that I didn't hear her correctly and what she really said was, "Mom, we need turkey!"

Update on Zeke's Doctor's Appointment

We arrived Blaine around 8pm on Wednesday night and spent the night with family - my brother's
ex-wife Annessa and my neice and nephew. Shelby made everyone pancakes for breakfast, which Zeke loved, and Alex made the coffee, which I loved!

.
Our appointment at Gillette Children's Hospital in St Paul was scheduled for 10:15am. It was only 18 miles to the hospital from the apartment but I left at 9am just to make sure we had plenty of time to get there. I'd rather be early than late because it can really mess up the whole day of our scheduled appointments if we're not on time. By leaving at 9, I didn't anticipate much rush hour traffic and we were crusing right along until about 3 miles from the hospital. There was an accident somewhere ahead and traffic slowed to a standstill. When we were moving, it was at 10 mph or less. I hung in there for a while, since we still had time to spare but as the time crept by, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I veared off onto the next exit and took off in the general direction of downtown St Paul. My best friend Jane wasn't happy that I wasn't following her directions but she eventually got the idea that I needed another way to get to the hospital. (Btw: Jane is my GPS and she IS my best friend! :) We got to the hospital just in time!
.
Once we checked in and provided all the necessary insurance information, we were sent to get
X-rays. The Children's hospital is so much better than our local hospital. In St Paul, they EXPECT that the parent will remain in the X-ray room with the child. I can choose whether to gown up and stand by Zeke or stand behind the glass with the technician. It really alleviates tension for the children, although Zeke's done it so often now that he absolutely loves it.

When I had to take Sophia for an X-ray at our local clinic a few weeks ago, they weren't even going to let me in the room. She was screaming and crying and already didn't feel good and her panicking wasn't helping them get her to lay still for the X-rays. You'd think they'd eventually learn that it's a lot easier and quicker with the parents involved, expecially with the little ones.

Anyway, after taking X-rays of Zeke's right foot and hips, we waited for his orthopedic doctor. She's the one who did the major orthopedic surgery a few years ago and also the right foot surgery last year. Turns out that she's now the Chief of Staff of the hospital. We think she is pretty amazing.

We met with the nurse for all the preliminary information and then we saw the doctor. She examined Zeke, asked us lots of questions and then watched him walk with his braces and without his braces. Everything looked good with his hips, legs and feet. She did have us go back to X-ray for some pictures of his spine. There was some concern at the last visit and during the observation about a slight curvature of his spine. But after she looked at the new X-rays, the doctor determined that Zeke just wasn't sitting up straight in the previous pictures and that his spine actually looks really good. Overall, everything looks really good and we won't have to see her until our next check-up in a year!

Dear Family,

Please do not attempt to talk to me in the morning before I have my coffee.

Thank you.

.........
Steve, Brittney and Riley have figured this out but apparently the rest of them are still learning.

back home & super tired!
Zeke & I made it safely to MN. I'm typing on my phone so forgive any weird typos. Don't worry, my OCD will make me go back & fix them when I get home to my computer.
Anyway, Zeke was happy until he started asking about his doctor. I guess he didn't understand that it's just a checkup. He's mad because he wants to stay at the hospital & have surgery! Most kids would be happy with just a checkup!
.
Told ya I'd fix them :)

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Zeke and I are hitting the road this afternoon/evening for St Paul. He has a checkup scheduled for tomorrow at 10:15am at the Children's Hospital. I'm hoping to be back before too late tomorrow night. I thought about making the trip in one day, leaving at 5am tomorrow............but a 4+ hour drive, then waiting at the hospital to see various people, then a 4+ hour drive home all in one day was less and less appealing to me. So we're going to crash at my sister-in-law's place tonight and come back after the appointment tomorrow.
